WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new push by former President Donald Trump has crypto enthusiasts fired up after he publicly supported the idea of paying for gas with digital currencies — a movement now gaining steam under the name “BitGas.”
The former president made several remarks in recent speeches and policy moves signaling his support for bringing cryptocurrency into everyday transactions, including at the pump. The BitGas concept is now being floated by supporters as the next step in making crypto usable for working Americans.
“We have to think big — Bitcoin, Ethereum — we’re going to make them useful. Real utility. Gas stations, grocery stores, you name it,” Trump said during a rally in Florida earlier this month.
This follows Trump’s March 2025 executive order establishing a U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and Digital Asset Stockpile, aimed at storing crypto seized in criminal cases and re-deploying it for national strategy purposes. Analysts see it as one of the clearest signals yet that the Trump camp is serious about normalizing crypto across industries.
In another major win for the crypto world, Trump signed a bill blocking an IRS rule that would’ve required decentralized platforms to report user transactions — a regulation many in the industry called “unenforceable” and “destructive.”
With the backing of figures close to the Trump circle — including World Liberty Financial’s plan to launch a dollar-pegged stablecoin (USD1) — crypto payment at gas stations may not be far off. “BitGas” is now trending across social platforms, driven by supporters calling it a “freedom coin for the pump.”
Several online forums have already speculated about which gas chains could be early adopters, with Shell and Chevron both mentioned as potential testing grounds should the infrastructure align.
“People don’t want Big Banks controlling every penny they spend,” said a Florida resident filling up his truck at a Mobil station. “If Trump’s helping us take that power back, I’m all in.”
As digital finance continues to disrupt traditional sectors, the question remains: will Americans soon be paying for unleaded with USDC, Bitcoin, or Trump-backed tokens?

We’ve borne witness to a chaotic first few months in Trump’s presidency.
Over the last months, each executive order has delivered shock and bewilderment — a core part of a strategy to make the right-wing turn feel inevitable and overwhelming. But, as organizer Sandra Avalos implored us to remember in Truthout last November, “Together, we are more powerful than Trump.”
Indeed, the Trump administration is pushing through executive orders, but — as we’ve reported at Truthout — many are in legal limbo and face court challenges from unions and civil rights groups. Efforts to quash anti-racist teaching and DEI programs are stalled by education faculty, staff, and students refusing to comply. And communities across the country are coming together to raise the alarm on ICE raids, inform neighbors of their civil rights, and protect each other in moving shows of solidarity.
It will be a long fight ahead. And as nonprofit movement media, Truthout plans to be there documenting and uplifting resistance.
